Free stuff

I'm a big fan of free stuff. Its like normal stuff, but free. Probably one of the biggest reasons I really like the internet; its filled with free stuff. =)

In the last two weeks, I've run across a couple places that seem to offer some fairly decent free stuff, without too much crap along with it.

The first one is:

Daily Lit - this website lets you sign up for a book to receive in small chunks through email. From what I can tell these books are all in the public domain, which is what makes this site work so well. We all know we spend a ton of time reading emails that are pointless throughout our day, so why not spend 5 minutes and in a couple weeks, finish a book that you wouldn't have read before. Personally, I'm starting with Sun Tzu's Art of War.

The collection isn't huge - and like I said, I'm fairly sure these are abridged version - but hey, its free. Beggers can't be choosers.

Second one is much more nerd worthy (do *NOT* visit this link with Internet Explorer 6 - There are a lot of pop-ups and I can't comment how safe it will be for your computer. Firefox 2 or IE 7 only):

The Underdogs is a website that hosts a *ton* of old games (nerd term of vaporware). The site is extremely slow, the downloads are painfully slow too - but if you're looking for an old game to play. This is the place to go (or if you have an old computer you want to throw a very fun game on).

If you're looking for a place to start I'd recommend (highly):

Ascendancy The 41mb download looks like its going to take me ~2 hrs (like I said, slow site). The only thing wrong with this game is the horrible AI. But, but believe it or not, the creator of this game (in 1995) actually has an AI patch still available here

Keep an eye out this week for some great New Years pictures from the cabin as well as my first review of how good (or bad) this whole "HD-DVD" craze is.
